Dall's Porpoise at Turn Point Habitat

$2,000.00

This 18’ x 24” mixed media original art piece on heavy watercolor paper comes unframed.

Dall’s Porpoise are a rarity in the Salish Sea these days, but I’ve had the privilege to encounter them several times back when I worked on a nature tour boat. A special Dall’s encounter was near the Turn Point Lighthouse on Stuart island, which this piece depicts. I have fond memories of Dall’s exuberance. They loved to ride the bow wave of our boat and always seemed to be smiling! They also swim about as fast as orca (~30mph) and create an unforgettable “rooster tail” of bursting sea spray.

Fun fact: although Dall’s porpoises are a distinct species, they do get frisky with their harbor porpoise cousins. Usually the mom is Dall’s and dad is the harbor porpoise - harbor porpoise males are much more promiscuous than male Dall’s, and they want to spread their seed as much as possible.

As always, at least 10% of sales (more when I can manage it) will be donated to various local nonprofits working to restore our Salish Sea and the Cascadia ecosystem.
